Article Title: AARP and Key Senators Urge Companies to End Age Bias in Recruiting on Facebook
Article Date: January 8th, 2018
Why I chose this: Ageism is a thing many, especially young, people don't take into account. This can affect any age group and applies to things such as jobs, financial necessities, etc. This article in particular highlights how online companies are avoiding hiring older people. Even though they could be completely capable doing the job, some may think that older individuals won't be as "hip" and able to use technology to the extent some younger workers possibly could. One interesting point this piece makes is that even in advertisements for jobs, they'll target specific age groups. Some examples include picking the age of the people (if any) in the ad, the choices of graphics and music, and the language used in the advertisement, which can all make a big difference in who the ad is trying to catch the attention of. The goal the author wanted was to open people's eyes to how apparent ageism is in the workspace, especially for social media businesses such as Facebook, and to hopefully get companies to give everyone an equal chance.

Article Title: Lawsuit Seeks Expanded Freedom for Utah's Intellectually Disabled Adults
Article Date: January 17th, 2018
Why I chose this: I thought it might be important to discuss the position adults with any type of intellectually disabling condition have in society. Many don't consider the lives that they have to live, which their close family is usually much involved in physically, mentally, and financially. This article is explaining how the homes that many adults are put into, "prove problematic because there in no effective mechanism for residents to leave if they desire to live more freely out in the community". For Utah, this could be changing, which may set new precedents for future states to follow along.

Article Title: Black Lives Matter and the Intrepid Lives That Preceded It
Article Date January 25th, 2018
Why I chose this: Books have been around ever since people started recording history. With this new book written by journalist Asha Bandele, "When They Call You a Terrorist" offers people a new perspective on how others are treated in both the U.S. and in the world as a whole. The article also discusses a new book on Civil Rights as another context for understanding Black Lives Matter.

Article Title: Indonesia Is Set To Ban Gay Sex & Indonesian Police Arrest 12 Transgender Women and Shave Their Heads
Article Date: January 29th and 31st
Why I Chose This: This week two news releases from the same place about similar subjects have come out, so I decided to discuss both in relation to diversity. The first to occur, the arrest and forced shaving of 12 transwomen, is a direct attack not just on those who are transgender, but everyone in the LGBTQ+ community. The second, a proposed ban on gay sex, is a public shaming and social discrimination upon those who are different. This news on sexual orientation and gender identity is why I consider them to be articles in relation to diversity.

Article Title: "A Different Kind of Superhero": Why "Black Panther" Will Mean So Much To So Many
Article Date: February 9th, 2018
Why I Chose This: I thought this article was important to diversity because it allows people to both reflect on the history the United States has had through African American civil rights while at the same time understanding that words can be reclaimed. For example, the word "queer" has recently gained positivity and is slowly being taken out of its former derogatory usage as a slur against those in the LGBTQ+ community. This new movie will, hopefully, give representation to the African American community as well as prove wrong the, "stereotypical notion that superheroes of color only work as sidekicks."

Article Title: Lady Doritos, Political Correctness and Feminism
Article Date: February 14th, 2018 (most updated)
Why I Chose This: Female CEO this week explained how women, “don’t like to crunch too loudly,” and, “don’t lick their fingers generously and they don’t like to pour the little, broken pieces and the flavor into their mouth.” This soon became both a meme as people designed a, “Doritos: For Her” bag as well as a political statement for how gender stereotypes are being negatively reinforced with things such as this. This article dips right into gender discussions and how society can impose bias and oppression on certain groups.
Week 7 Link: http://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-43142044Article Title: MTV fires David Eason for homophoic tweetsArticle Date: February 21st, 2018Why I Chose This: It's interesting how companies are showing their affiliations and support to particularly dividing groups, Even so much so that they are willing to get rid of a major character form a show because they don't share the same perspective. Years ago this would not have been as public of an event. Recently conversation in the media has been on several subjects of diversity. Including race, gender, age, and, of course, sexual orientation.

Week 8Link: http://www.governing.com/topics/public-justice-safety/tns-doj-lawsuit-houston-fire-department.html
Article Title: DOJ Sues Houston Over Discrimination Against Female Firefighters
Article Date: March 1st, 2018Why I Chose This: I was actually really surprised to see this in 2018. These two women, who have become hero's and risk takers in their line of work, faced harsh gender discrimination and it's shocking how others can feel so easily okay with such behavior. As mentioned in the article, even after nine complaints no additional actions were taken to help them.

Week 9Link: http://www.onlineathens.com/news/20180307/loaded-semiautomatic-gun-found-at-uga-bus-stopArticle Title: Loaded Semiautomatic Gun Found At UGA Bus Stop Article Date: March 7th, 2018Why I Chose This: The topic of a person's right to bare arms and gun control are something only in the past few years more of a hot topic. This heated debate comes straight to the University itself. Just a few weeks ago a gun shootout accord at a Florida school, which made national news. Now the students are speaking up against guns. In terms of UGA, we do have (concealed) campus carry allowed. An unattended gun of this power is definitely a scary thing to find on our campus.

Week 10
Link: __http://www.4029tv.com/article/students-address-offensive-snapchat-post-and-diversity/19414507__Article Title: Students Address Offensive Snapchat Posts And DiversityArticle Date: March 13th, 2018Why I Chose This: After a student posted a picture of himself, “wearing black face” discuss has been brought up over the overall climate this university for its students. Some feel fear and others anger. Luckily, for this situation, the school is working with the students in order to hear how they can help. If they actually implement plans (such as task forces with equal representation to focus work on diversifying the school) is an unknown, but at least there’s some hope for change in the future. The student who posted the picture has been claimed to have left the school on his own choosing. What interests me most is whether or not UGA has any sort of task force focused on diversity as the ratio of students isn’t the best here, but has been getting better over the past few years

Week 11
Link: https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/red-alert-politics/college-students-find-diversity-more-important-than-free-speechArticle Title: College Students Find Diversity More Important Than Free SpeechArticle Date: March 19th, 2018Why I Chose This: I found this article enticing since I, being a college student, am someone who has opinions in this perspective audience. I guess it all, for me, depends heavily on a situation to situation bases. However, in a wide spectrum view, I think this study further shows how perspectives are changing with each generation and, with that, the word diversity is being redefined.

What was also interesting this year was that the opposing group, Deliver, ran a man named Andrew, who would have become the first openly gay elected person for student government if he were elected.

Week 13
Link: http://smdp.com/hollywoods-diversity-push-snubs-actors-with-disabilities/165371Article Title: Hollywood's Diversity Push Snubs Actors With DisabilitiesArticle Date: April 5th, 2018Why I Chose This: This article is interesting as it both gives stories of the experiences people with disabilities have had while performing while also discussing how Hollywood has made many strides forward in being more diverse (such as with race and in the LGBTQ+ community. In all of these, sadly, there are still hurdles to be jumped
